Creating the Perfect Ergonomic Workstation

Posted on by admin

The productivity of your workforce will be one of the primary factors behind the success or failure of your business. One of the main causes of reduced productivity is low staff morale, and this will often be caused by an unsuitable or uncomfortable working environment.

Here at OEG Interiors we have over thirty years of experience in providing great looking and ergonomically designed office furniture – but what is it that makes the perfect ergonomic workstation?

The Chair

The two key elements that make a task chair ergonomic are the seat and the backrest.

Firstly, the seat must be adjustable to suit the size of the individual. Although a height between 6 and 21 inches will be appropriate for the majority of your employees, if it does not allow for the arms and thighs to be kept horizontal and the feet flat it will need to be adjusted.

It is also important that the seat is wide and deep enough, while it is recommended that you have 2 to 4 inches between the front of the seat and the back of the knee.

Secondly, it is essential that the backrest provides adequate support for the lumbar and lower spine. Adjustability is key here also, as the user needs to ensure that the height and depth suits them.

Workspace Dimensions

If you’ve ever had to work from a cluttered desk then you will know how hard it is to be productive when you can’t even find everything you need. A properly designed desktop should have enough space for your employees to perform their jobs efficiently, however there are a range of other measurements that need to be considered.

The minimum height of a desk is considered to be 690-695 mm, while the depth below the desk should be a minimum of 1000 mm to allow for easy leg movement. Ideally you should invest in desks with an adjustable height to ensure it can accommodate any user.

Don’t Forget…

There are numerous other measures you can take to make sure your workspaces are ergonomic, including keyboard and mouse pad rests for the wrists as well as utilising fully adjustable monitors.
