The Importance of Light & Space for Improved Productivity

Posted on by admin

As the difficult conditions facing the Global economy continue unabated, productivity and profitability are more important than ever to employers. Intelligent office design has long been trumpeted as an effective way of maintaining staff morale and boosting work rate, but what part does light and space play specifically?

Affecting us on a Chemical Level

A study conducted at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is Lausanne, Switzerland found that working in conditions where natural light was present significantly improved alertness levels at the beginning of the evening.

This is because natural light influences the levels of melatonin a person produces, and melatonin directly affects alertness. If your office is deprived of daylight and instead relies on artificial lighting, your employees will feel more tired faster.

Creating a Fluid Working Environment

At OEG Interiors when we design an office we put a lot of emphasis on space, both in terms of working space for staff as well as ‘circulation space’ – the areas in the corridors and between desks.

Not only is a more open office plan more conducive to natural light conditions, it also offers productivity benefits in terms of logistics. A free-flowing office that allows people to move from one area to the other quickly and efficiently not only allows for things to get done quicker, but avoids the negative psychological impact a claustrophobic working environment can pose.
