How Office Design Affects Company Productivity

Posted on by admin

The backbone of any business is the productivity of its work force. Most office employees will tell you they have never been asked what kind of office space works best for them, whether their environment meets their needs or whether they are hindered by their working set up. There are of course valid reasons for this: not everyone craves the same environment and office refurbishments can be costly and time consuming, but adapting your space can have a significant impact on morale and productivity. Office refurbishments are about so much more than a window view and extra space, the impact of office environments is reflected in the speed and quality of work which in turn boosts your business and your profits, so it’s time to take a closer look at office refurbishments.

Does Environment Really Make A Significant Difference?

Trying to quantify the productivity of employees in different environments is difficult, that’s why we rely on experts! In the United States tests were carried out on 600 software employees from 92 companies, they were all given the same work to complete and were judged on their competency and their time management and the results were clear:

  1. The best work outperformed the worst by a staggering ratio of 10 to 1
  2. Age, experience and salary had no impact on performance
  3. Those who had positive feelings towards their working environment performed significantly better than those who had negative feelings

The results show a direct correlation between environment and productivity, so how can you enhance your environment?

Promoting Community And Creativity

Cubicles in offices and closed off space are becoming an outdated concept, while the theory behind them is sound (individuals can work with a degree of privacy and aren’t distracted by other people’s work habits) the affects can in fact be detrimental to productivity. Open plan environments on the other hand encourage interaction between colleagues which solidifies relationships, morale and boosts creativity; 2 heads are better than 1. Attractive modern offices help employees to feel happy in their space, aid equal opportunity communication, remove barriers of status and are even less expensive to maintain. A happy workforce is a productive workforce and a productive workforce makes you money.
