Who is Gen Y?

Generation Y, also often referred to as millenials, is the generation of people born during the 1980s and early 1990s. They are tech savvy, having a penchant for digital communication and quickly becoming a very key part of our workforces. You will find Gen Y equipped with latest technology such as iPhones, iPads and so on and they will be online and connected 24/7. These ambitious individuals have grown up alongside huge technological change and will quickly embrace exciting developments in the ever evolving digital age.

What makes Gen Y tick?

From a commercial perspective Gen Y see the vital need for the correct work-life balance to bring the ultimate satisfaction to life. They see that too much work will destroy your life and too much life will destroy your work. So they have developed the art of bringing the two together. Their belief is that in this age of connectivity you can be just as productive from home as behind the office desk, with flexible working hours being greatly favoured. So whilst home is becoming more and more of a workplace, the workplace environment is becoming more and more of a home in order to appeal to this generation.

Studies show that job satisfaction comes above financial reward whilst 70% are more inclined to reject traditional business approaches preferring to work independently by digital means.

How are Gen Y shaping workspace design?

In order to embrace Gen Y in the workspace there is clearly a need to step outside the box. Gone are the days of restricted office cubicles and closed formal meeting rooms. Walls are being removed and space is being opened out. What has become known as ‘third space’ is becoming an integral part of workspace design. Gen Y prefer informal areas for brainstorming and idea sharing to the traditional desk space, whilst connectivity is required anywhere and everywhere.

You will find that Gen Y will thrive on flexibility so it is key to ensure your workspace accommodates this. Having areas to break away from the hubbub of the office activities is essential as is fun and creative relaxation zones.

So in order to attract this young and fun loving talent we need to get creative. Slides and games rooms, quirky colourful designs and so forth will all build the kind of working environment that Gen Y want to be a part of. They like something to be proud of and brag about.
